Ducks at Haddon Lake Park: Photos by Kate

I have been a casual visitor of your site for a few months- I love your photos!! I am hoping you could help me identify the duck in the first picture I attached (the all brown one with a dark bill). The others I just attached because the mallards were having so much fun in the sun today out on the frozen lake. The white ducks were also out on the lake with the mallards soaking up the sun. These pictures were taken on a walk around Haddon Lake Park in Haddon Heights, NJ on January 16th.

Thanks for your help identifying that first duck!

Kate,
We aren't sure what the first duck is either. We checked a few books and can't get a positive ID. Perhaps someone who knows will leave a comment. If that doesn't work, there are a few other sites on the web that can help.

Whatbird has a bird ID forum that has helped us occasionally. See
http://www.whatbird.com/forums/forums/10/ShowForum.aspx

Flickr has a Bird Identification Help Group

Thanks for the photos.

Photo from Amy in Ringwood, NJ

Honestly, I am not sure if it is a falcon or a young hawk (if you could help me out, that would be great!)

For the past few weeks, my dad and brother and I have been hearing the calls of falcons (which is what we have been assuming) and even last week one was perched right on our deck. Then last night when I went to put out the garbage and my dog started growling at something on the ground, I saw the bird just staring back at me. We don't know how it got injured but I called Animal Control and a woman came to take it to a shelter. She said it didn't seem too bad, but it will have to be checked out and eventually (hopefully) released. I've included a few photos.

I feel bad now though since I keep hearing the other birds calling for the missing one - I even saw one falcon today sitting around the spot that I found the injured bird :( We'll see how things work out.

How many hummingbirds do you see? (Photo by Vicki in Jackson, NJ)

The ones in the picture are mostly the female and adolescent ruby throated hummingbirds. There are actually 8 that I can see to count. Can you find all 8? There were more than that, but this is what I could catch on film.

Hope you enjoy.

In a domestic duck, that's called a bibbed duck. Could have occurred naturally or a domestic duck (mallard derivative) bred with a wild duck and the trait is now "out there".

I think this is a Sharpshined Hawk.

My husband happened to be at the window & got this great shot of him.

Thanks,

I think your "ring-necked ducks" are actually mallard ducks. Mallard ducks are common where I live. Ring-necked ducks are much smaller.

Cooper's Hawk from Robert in Mercer County

I live in Hamilton Square in Mercer County, New Jersey. My back yard is small in a 1950's housing development. My wife and I were astounded to see what I believe to be an adult Cooper's Hawk in a tree in our back yard on the morning of 12/29/08. The hawk was actually inside a squirrel's nest and within a few minutes moved out.

Titmouse and Hawk: misseymarie from Butler, NJ

I finally was able to get a picture of a Titmouse. I have been trying for months but they are usually too quick for me. When we get 4 or 5 at a time, they just carry on in their playful, amusing manner and bring a smile everytime.

The picture of the Hawk is either a Coopers or Sharp-shinned. We have had Hawk visitors a lot lately and I not sure if there is a couple of different ones or I'm taking pictures of the same Hawk and they just look different because of the way the light shines off them. I don't think the light has anything to do with the eye color but I have a couple of pictures and the Hawk has blue eyes and the picture I took today the eyes look yellow. Prior to June 28th I had been watching the parents go in and out of the hole in the tree and finally on June 28th I was able to get a photo of the baby sticking its head out of the hole.
